“There is always a moment, just before the shutter fires, when the room holds its breath. I wait for that moment.”
Mia Kavčič began shooting in borrowed light — small apartments in Ljubljana, later Warsaw, later Milan. She learned early that a photograph is not taken. It is agreed upon. Between the photographer, the subject, and whatever quality of light has decided to show up that afternoon.
She does not use presets. She does not shoot in burst mode hoping something lands. Each session is prepared in conversation — sometimes weeks of it — so that when the day arrives, the only thing left to do is be present.
What you see in these pages is not a demonstration of technique. It is a record of specific moments that cannot be repeated. That is the only kind of photography worth making.
